Husky sledding

You really ‘mush’ experience this wilderness adventure!

If one experience screams Lapland more than any other, it's this one. Picture it... you're snuggled into a sled, being speedily pulled through the snow by beautiful huskies – on a wild and breathtaking ride that will have you wanting to throw away your railcard forever. Often cited as the highlight of the trip by many who come to stay, this excursion is an extra-special treat for tourists. That’s why it’s such a huge attraction in the region and plays a significant part in the tourism industry here.

While there are of course many experiences unique to Lapland, this one is truly memorable; nothing compares to the exhilaration of being drawn through Arctic snowscapes by enthusiastic dogs, which receive the greatest care of and are treated like family. You’ll speed through the frozen snowscapes taking in the beautiful, natural surroundings that Lapland has in abundance. You’ll skate across ice-covered lakes, dodge snow-dusted branches through thick forests or even track down those irresistible Northern Lights on this unique mode of transport.

The dogs are bred for this wintery environment so are super-speedy on the ice and snow. The huskies’ excitement is infectious, and they’ll be raring to go at your command. Driving the sled is simple, although make sure you know where the brake pedal is (of course, our staff will ensure everything on the trip is safe and comfortable for you). But, be warned, you will become attached to your new canine friends. Unfortunately, you can’t take them home with you... sorry, we’re attached too!

Learn to be a husky 'musher'

Before snowmobiles, huskies provided a fast and reliable way to travel vast distances and transport goods across the land. They delivered an important line of communication and essential supply chain during the First World War, and have long helped the locals traverse the snowy tundra of the Arctic. Yes, no wonder dogs are 'man’s best friend,’ with such a rich tradition of man and beast working together in total harmony, a tradition we proudly continue at Transun. As such, we offer a number of Arctic expeditions where you can experience the thrill of being pulled through the magnificent snowscapes by your very own team of dogs. Each offers the opportunity to drive your own sled, and you don’t even have to worry about traffic lights or parking permits!

Choose from a variety of explorations of Lapland’s incomparable wilderness. One thing’s for sure, you’ll hear the excitable dogs before you see them. They are full of joy and life – and they make sure you know about it too!

Once you’re on the sled, don’t be intimidated by the dogs, as they are trained and friendly. Your guide will create a team to suit you. You’ll also be directed on how to drive the huskies; essentially, remember to steer and brake. Don’t let go. And have fun! And of course as always, wrap up warm. As cute as the huskies are, cuddling them to keep warm isn’t an option!

You’ll be surprised that it doesn’t take long to get a feel for husky mushing. Soon enough you’ll be concentrating more on the impressive landscapes around you and letting the dogs just do their own thing. With no fumes, a manageable speed and only huskies yapping for background noise, this is the perfect eco-friendly way to travel. And really, can you imagine a cooler way to commute?

Puppy love

While the older husky dogs are adorable and our guests love to stroke and pose for selfies with them, meeting the puppies is – as you'd imagine – very popular amongst guests. After all, who doesn’t love a puppy? On the farms where our trips depart from, one litter of husky puppies is usually bred each year. This litter of husky puppies brings a lot of pleasure to guests on our Santa short breaks as they have the chance to meet them as part of the 'Puppy Encounter' optional excursion. And this might give you paws for thought... the only hard part is saying goodbye!
