In the heart of the Sami reindeer herding region
Choosing a favourite of our True Lapland resorts is impossible – each one is unique and offers something different. But there is something extra special about the remote hidden gem that is Karesuando, as anyone who has been can attest.
Known as Karesuando in Sweden and Karesuvanto in Finland, it is actually a pair of villages located on the Swedish/Finnish border. Separated by the Muonio River, they are connected by a bridge. It's easy to cross between both countries and experience two different languages and time zones. You can get a picture of yourself with one foot in Sweden and one in Finland, with a sign that shows you exactly where the divide happens. It’s a fun pastime for visitors, who rarely get to cross borders so easily, jumping back and forth, with no passports or security involved!
Nestled in the heart of the Sami reindeer herding region, this area was once an important trading post. It also has a fascinating religious heritage dating back to the 17th century when Lars Levi Laestadius lived here and founded Laestadianism, a Pietist revival movement. You can feel the cultural significance as you explore this fascinating area.
Karesuando is home to a lovely wood-built church – the most northerly in Sweden. It’s a beautiful building that feels moving as soon as you enter, whether you’re religious or not, and the friendly locals will make you feel right at home.
You’ll also discover a Sami museum, where you can learn more about the fascinating cultures and traditions of this indigenous tribespeople, as well as a handful of shops including a knife maker (pick up a very different gift or souvenir, with handles made from actual reindeer antlers) and endlessly beautiful views across the open tundra of frozen lakes and snow-covered forests. There’s so much to explore, you’ll be thrilled you added Karesuando to your fun-filled itinerary.
With little light pollution – the air here is believed to be the cleanest in the world – Karesuando is considered a prime viewing spot for the Northern Lights. Seeing the green and blue colours dance across the clear night sky will stay with you forever, if you’re lucky enough to witness one of the seven natural wonders of the world, in one of the places recognised by the governments of Finland, Sweden and Norway as offering the best views of the world-famous Northern Lights. Our expert staff can guide you to ensure you have the best chance possible of seeing the magical and mystical Aurora Borealis – to really make your friends back home jealous! Or rather, as green with envy as the lights themselves…
Karesuando would be a stunning and truly unforgettable addition to your Lapland holiday, for those who want to make their trip extra special.
