Enjoy the de-lights
Perched at the northwesternmost tip of Finland along the Official Northern Lights Route, the tiny village of Kilpisjarvi is one of the best places on Earth to see the Northern Lights. It’s so far north above the treeline that it offers wide open, unobstructed landscapes perfect for viewing the dazzling natural phenomenon that is the much-sought Aurora Borealis, with little light pollution (the air here is believed to be the cleanest in the world).
Seeing the green and blue colours dance across the clear night sky will stay with you forever, if you’re lucky enough to witness one of the seven natural wonders of the world, in one of the places recognised by the governments of Finland, Sweden and Norway as offering the best views of the world-famous Northern Lights. Our expert staff can guide you to ensure you have the best chance possible of seeing the magical and mystical Aurora Borealis – to really make your friends back home jealous! Or rather, as green with envy as the lights themselves…
The skyline in Kilpisjarvi is dominated by Saana Fell, an iconic landmark in True Lapland, which is part of the Scandinavian mountains. With the sweeping views it offers at its summit, it has proved very popular with hikers and explorers and has inspired countless stories.
Legend has it that long before humans were around, a surly giant named Saana fell head over heels for beautiful Malla. However, his rival, the jealous giant Paltsa, wanted to stop their wedding. He implored three witches to summon icy winds that froze Saana in his spot, while near him Malla flung herself in her mother’s arms and cried the tears that formed Lake Kilpis.
We can assure you that you don’t have to worry about giants and witches if you go and see the Saana Fell on your trip. And we can guarantee this is a real bucket-list destination if you can fit it in!
A popular attraction and geographic point of interest near Kilpisjarvi is the Three-Country Cairn. This is where the borders of Finland, Norway and Sweden meet. Set on a lake that freezes over in winter, you can visit the international tripoint by snowmobile.
Imagine zipping across a frozen lake on a snowmobile, feeling like you’re moving at the speed of light, with blankets of smooth white snow beside you becoming a blur as you glide around exploring. Our snowmobile tours are often cited as a highlight for those who come to Lapland. Our expert staff will look after you well and ensure everyone is safe and enjoying their tour.
Kilpisjarvi would be a stunning and truly unforgettable addition to your Lapland holiday, for those who want to make their trip extra special.
